Best T in the City has been following the #BreakingBoarders journey where travel content creator, Katchie Nzama, is travelling to 24 countries across the African continent. Here she shares her experience in Tunisia.
After Sousse I headed down to the desert of Tunisia. With temperatures like 27°C at 07:30 AM one just has to learn to survive. I had partnered with an American guy as my travel partner in order to cut costs and Tunisian were very confused as they assumed he was my husband and I played along. The confusion is in these parts of the world, they don’t know of interracial relationships.
I visited Medinine desert town and there was only one thing to see there — Medinine museum which was also used as a shoot location in the Stars Wars movies.
Tunisia has a few star wars shoot locations. The next one we visited was Matmata where there is a Berber hotel which is also a Star Wars shoot location. We stayed at the hotel for a night. The Berber people were nomadic and gathered their fruits and vegetables and roots and would store them in these houses. They used camels to get around the desert and preferred the desert as no one could go that far to steal their property. Their houses are built underground and it’s a lot of passageways, there is no air conditioning or windows but it’s surprisingly very cool inside. To the point where the hotel provides large blankets as you could get cold.
I am now in Rabat, Morocco and will be visiting the SA embassy tomorrow morning before heading out to the Mohamed Museum where the last 2 kings of Morocco are buried and will travel to the colourful town of Chefchaouen and down to Marrakesh where I will go into the desert and live in a small desert village with a local community before traveling through Western Sahara to Mauritania next week.
I also got to have breakfast with Sundowns soccer team on Sunday before flying out, as they are in Tunisia and have a game on Wednesday night.
