I take my hat off for Zwelinzima Vavi

I must say I admire Cosatu’s general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi‘s conviction in what he believes is right. Over the past two years he has come under serious pressure both in his personal life and in his quest to defend workers’ rights.
This is a man who has served Cosatu for 15 years.
Today I’m saddened by the fact that the very organisation he served seems hell-bent on destroying his character. I’m not saying that Vavi does not make mistakes or even error of judgement , all I’m really trying to say is can we look at what he stands and fights for.
I watched him with keen interest at the press conference, wearing his Cosatu’s emblem on his chest, even as many speculated that would be the end of his relationship with the union.
He is still calling on his haters to produce conclusive evidence that he took from the poor.
For me, Vavi represents the kind of political leader who is human. I agree he should not have had an affair with an employee.
However, we need the kind of unionist who will challenge even his bosses on issues that affect the poor. Someone who will rattle the feathers of a “strong” tripartite alliance partnership?
I wonder whether the Central Committee meeting will decide to oust him, or look at issues they have against him on merit. If merit requires him to step down or to be dismissed, then so be it.
