#HerSummer – Our Favourite Friendships
We are sharing a #WCW with a twist. The friendship between women is a wonderful thing to behold, they support and root for each other all the way. It’s even more endearing when one or both women in that friendship are in the public eye as we get to witness them support and love each other. Here are three friendship duos we simply love:
Gayle King and Oprah Winfrey
They are simply known as Oprah and Gayle when their friendship is referenced and it’s no wonder because media mogul Oprah Winfrey and editor and radio host Gayle King practically invented #BestFriendGoals:
Both women work in media but they have never been in competition with each other. In fact, King worked on O, The Oprah Magazine as an editor for years and when The Oprah Winfrey Show closed in 2011, Gayle had been a guest 139 times!
How they met: In 1976 Oprah Winfrey was a news anchor at a small station and Gayle King worked as a production assistant on the team. One night Oprah invited Gayle to stay at her flat to wait for a storm to pass. They stayed up all night talking.
Pearl Thusi and DJ Zinhle
Pearl Thusi and DJ Zinhle are home girls, both coming fro KwaZulu. But their friendship got closer in 2015 after DJ Zinhle was public about her partner cheating on her during her pregnancy. Pearl came out strongly to support her and they have been inseparable ever since. Again, we love these two because they showcase what support looks like in women friendships A few weeks ago, Zinhle flew to New York City to visit Pearl who’s currently in the States shooting her latest role, and international big break, Quantico. We are sure they share parenting advice all the time.
How they met: in the entertainment industry
Khanya Mkhangisa and Boity Thulo
Khanya Mkhangisa and Boity Thulo are representing strong friendships between women for the younger generation. Both had the same career trajectory: they started as kid presenters and went on to act and host. In South Africa’s toxic celebrity culture that’s always pitting young starlets against each other on Sunday papers, Khanya and Boity can be found constantly supporting and pushing each other to be better. Just look at the hashtag #KHAiTY on Instagram.
How they met: probably at an industry event
