Hawks summon Pravin Gordhan
The Hawks are refusing to confirm that they have summoned finance minister Pravin Gordhan and four other former SARS officials.
According to reports the five have been instructed to present themselves to the Hawks head office at 10am tomorrow to receive warning statements.
This is in connection with charges they are likely to face in relation to the controversial “rogue unit”.
The unit was established allegedly by Gordhan while heading SARS – to spy on citizens and government officials.
Gordhan has reportedly been informed that he will be receiving a “warning statement” given to an accused person before they are charged with an offence
Despite the Hawks declining to verify the latest move – the department of finance confirmed the correspondence without commenting on its contents.
These reports have affected the Rand which is struggling this morning as it responds to reports that the Hawks have summoned Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
The currency is now trading at 14.12, from the R13.93 to the US dollar at 6 this morning
This is the weakest level against the dollar in three weeks.
