Gogo Sibongile Langa opens her heart to abuse victims
Sibongile Langa is a 62-year-old grandmother from the township of Toekomsrus in Randfontein on the Westrand. Gogo Langa started working at the friendly victim empowerment centre – Women Against Women And Children Abuse in 2007. The busy support group, WAWA, is housed within the Randfontein police station, with victim support centres in townships of Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus. WAWA offers a wide range of services to ALL Victims of crime and violence, including but not limited to Domestic Violence, Gender Based Violence(GBV), Hate Crimes(LGBTI and Xenophobia), Rape, Armed Robbery, Home Robbery, Assault, Incest, Hate Crimes.
Mama Sibongile is a trained domestic violence counsellor by profession. “I am so proud to be celebrating 16 years of saving marriages and uniting couples who fight making what is supposed to be warm relationships unbearable”, she said with a smile. The shy mama Sibongile is a devoted senior counsellor leading a team of three (3) other counsellors and two (2) volunteers. She is strong, in good health and dedicated. “Doing counselling to victims of abuse is exciting. The challenge is resources. I meet a lot of people daily, young and old. I don’t get tired at all. If you’ve got an interest in people, that’s what gets you out to work”, echoed the passionate Langa.
Langa also says what really warms her heart is to see a resolution to the problems brought to her team
Having spent some time with mama Sibongile, there is no doubt she is an “unknown icon and an inspiration with an incredible legacy”.
The WAWA support group also offer the following services for free:
- Shelter for abused women and their children (short term)
- Assisting ALL victims of crime.
- Mediation – family preservation
- Counselling: Face to face, Telephonic, Individual, Couples, groups
- and families.
- Information and referrals.
- Educational workshops, talks, Lobbying and campaigning.
- Court referrals and legal advice.
- Life skills programme
