Fees protests spread
As students of Wits University head back to their main campus where protests started this morning, a group of students at the University of Pretoria gathered to also protest. Students are against the announcement made by Higher Education minister Blade Nzimande yesterday.
Some 30 students were arrested at Wits this morning. It’s understood they are being kept at the Hillbrow Police station.
Minister Nzimande announced the 2017 fee structure yesterday. Universities we told that it is up to them to determine how much fees will increase by. The Minister has set the bar at not more than an 8 percent increment.
Students want a zero percent increase and are against it being left up to the institution.
Wits students also marched to the Medical school in Parktown as well as the Education campus. Earlier in the day students at Wits blocked Empire Road as well as parts of Jan Smuts Avenue in Johannesburg.
Last year students across the country took to the streets against a fee hike and ended up having their way with no increment.
