Three Fun Family Day Activities in Jozi
Who doesn’t want to be an Easter-egg-bringing, superhero parent? Easter is a time when your family can share some well-deserved quality time together. After all, isn’t this what Family Day is all about? That is why we went Easter hunting for exciting things for you and your family to do this Family Day. And in case you forgot, it is on March 28, so you still have time to arrange something that the kids will brag about when they get back to school!
Montecasino Bird Gardens
In this magical wonderland of feathered beauties, there is so much to see that no one will ask ‘can we go home now?’ Montecasino is a hive of activities but a favourite for all ages is their Bird Gardens. The centre’s aim is to educate adults and children of all ages about conservation and environmental awareness. Bird Gardens hosts a daily Flight of Fantasy Bird Show, which is a free educational extravaganza that promises thrills and excitement.
Montecasino’s Bird Gardens are open on all public holidays and are situated in Fourways on William Nicol Drive.
Cost is R64 per adult and R 36 per child older than 2 years old.
The Hector Peterson Museum
As we draw nearer to the 40th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto student rebellion on June 16, it seems fitting that we include a trip to the Hector Peterson Museum to this list. Named for the 13-year-old child who was among the first victims to die during the riot, after being shot, the museum bring visitors into the history in ways you can only imagine. While this historical event is widely known by the world over, not many understand how Hector Peterson became a hero. The image of his lifeless body being carried by his classmates became the most potent representation of South Africa in the 1970s. Even 40 years later, the photograph of Hector remains an iconic and recognisable image of struggle.
Being able to read the history and watch videos inside the museum takes you back to the deplorable reminder of the past. With rope nooses and jail cells on display alongside the unmistakable yellow Casspirs – those ominous looking mine-resistant ambush vehicles that were used so frequently during high apartheid– it gives visitors a glimpse into our history.
The museum is situated on 8288 Khumalo Road in Orlando West, Soweto and is open from 10am to 4pm daily.
Entrance is free for children under 13, while adults pay only R25.
Cedar Junction Annual Easter Egg Hunt
But what would Family Day be without a real Easter Egg Hunt? Here, children get to hunt for chocolate eggs, have their photo taken with the Easter Bunny and spend the day wrapped up in all that the Park has to offer. The Easter Egg hunt is scheduled from 11:00, so if you play your cards right, by 12:00, you can have your fill of chocolate bunnies, to save your kids from a tummy ache later, naturally.
But, while the sugar rush is still in full swing, there are jumping castles and jungle gyms that make a great outlet for everyone to have fun on!
The one-day-only event is on March 28, 9am-3pm. Cedar Junction Park is on Plot 404, Graham Road in Zwavelpoort, Pretoria East.
Kids pay R50 while entrance for adults is only R20.
However you choose to spend your Family Day, make sure you do it together.
