[EXCLUSIVE] White Quantum Terrorises Johannesburg Commuters
In the course of various investigations, KayaNews has found that three men in a white Quantum taxi have been terrorising female commuters in various areas of the City of Johannesburg, in particular, Ormonde, Mondeor, Naturena, Main Reef Road, Ontdekkers and Dobsonville. Since talking to “Buhle“, one of their victims from earlier this week, a number of other victims have since come forward. Buhle shared her ordeal with KayaNews.
Buhle boarded a white Quantum taxi as per usual only to be held at gunpoint by one of the men. She had her bank card and other valuables taken from her and was instructed to put her head down in the back seat. He then demanded her card pin and, using a Speedpoint, he accessed cash from her account.
While she was crouched in the back seat with a view of the man’s shoes, he went through her phone, chatting nonchalantly, yet menacingly, about what he was seeing on her phone. The taxi, Buhle says, drove for a while until it came to a stop at which pint the driver and the other man got out of the vehicle.
Inside the taxi the man who had the gun pointed at her repeatedly asked if she knew where she was. “Buhle” told the man that she did not. When she looked around, she realised that she had been taken to a desolate veld.
The man then led her into the veld. She was told not to utter a word, and that, if she screamed, she would be killed. The man with the gun then instructed her to take one leg of her pants off for him to make it easier for him to rape her. He warned her that, once the deed was done, and if she did not want the other men to also come and rape her, she should run once he told her to. When he was done, she ran for her life and was helped by a man who was passing by and his son.
Sadly, the violation did not end here for Buhle. When she got to Braamfischer, Soweto, the police in her area would not open a case for her and instead sent her to Dube police station. Police at Dube sent her to Orlando police station, where they sent her back to Dube, only for that police station to send her back to Orlando.
The tragedy lies not only in the fact that there are a group of men preying on women but also how those who are meant to help add to the ordeal. The way police dealt with this particular case is very disappointing, to say the least and a sad indication of how rape is dealt with by law enforcement, in a country where rape borders on an epidemic. It was only because bravely reached out to KayaNews to share that her case has now been picked and also resulted in others coming forward.
Community Safety MEC in Gauteng, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has now taken up “Buhle’s case as well as those of the other women who have come forward because, as she stated, “our police on the ground are failing people.” She has also committed to providing all the victims with counselling and is engaging with the taxi industry.
We hope that arrests will be made and perpetrators put behind bars.
