Cinderella at Joburg Ballet – A Perfect Outing
You know the story by now – it’s the night of a glittering ball in an unnamed kingdom. All the girls are primping and getting ready to attend. Well, all but one – the forgotten orphan Cinderella, whose life consists of cleaning up after her cruel and negligent stepmother and her spoilt stepsisters. In Joburg Ballet’s presentation of the timeless fairy tale, the ball comes to life like never before.
Cinderella is choreographed by Joburg Ballet’s artistic director, Iain McDonald, and will have you rooting for the lead character to triumph over her evil stepfamily. Cinderella first premiered on the Joburg Ballet stage in 2013 and the return of this production is for 10 shows only. The 2016 cast includes Kitty Phetla, Nicole Ferreira-Dill, Cuban ballerina Claudia Monja and Joburg Ballet prima ballerina, Burnise Silvius, who danced the lead role of Cinderella on opening night.
While you may know the story of Cinderella – an unlikely princess-to-be, who defeats odds to end up with her prince and live happily ever – the Joburg Ballet shows how the tale can be told with no words at all, in exquisite and stunning movement that’s certain to make you jump to your feet and applaud at the end.
It wouldn’t be a fairy tale without gorgeous costumes and this production certainly delivers on that, plus there’s the beautiful music by Austrian composer Johann Strauss. Your understanding of the story of Cinderella and of ballet is guaranteed to shift.
This weekend, the last two days of the ballet, there are two performances at 15h00, making them the perfect family outing. If you’d like to take your significant other for a date night, then the later shows are what you should aim for.
