Bob’s Weekend Newspaper Wrap – 10 January 2016
I suppose to make this a real News wrap, we cannot ignore the racism that ushered in 2016. We now know that numerous organisations and individuals are taking Penny Sparrow on in different courts of law, Carien Du Plesis has been forgiven by the ANC but my friend Gareth Cliff faces a bit of an uphill after being relieved of his duties on MNet’s Idols reality show. On the State, The City Press tells us that the State is having another look at its anti-discrimination laws. Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development John Jeffery, told the City press that his department was looking at introducing legislation on hate crimes. This country hosted the “The world conference against racism” in 2001 but we are miles behind in getting anything usable or even tangible against this crime. Minister Jeffery, please move on this piece of legislation; you are 300 years late, Sir! Oh and do check out page 15 – the opinion page in the Sunday Times, three different people give readers their take on racism in South Africa. Personally, I go with CIC Julius Malema’s article on the issue.
Flip over to the Sunday Times to page 5, right underneath a picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and there you will see these words “Nothing personal, I come a long way with the president, but I cannot choose him over the ANC. A person who cannot do his or her own introspection, scrutinize himself….he or she needs no second chance in life and his or her case is hopeless”. These, my dear Afropolitans, are the words of Trompies member Eugene Mthethwa; referring to President Jacob Zuma. Apparently they used to be BFFs and now Zuma isn’t even taking Eugene’s call – he has been blocked!!!! Eugene is an established business man with great entrepreneurial skills. The man is a bonfire capitalist BUT, he claims that the president is now only associating with CAPITALISTS who are leading him astray. Methinks Mzanele Manyi needs to give Eugene a call – it seems the lifespan of being the president’s buddy is getting shorter by the minute – ask Juju, Vavi, Blade, Sdumo and the man who gave him his first pistol as a freedom fighter. History has shown us that Msholozi’s best friend for life is well……..Msholozi.
I scanned the papers trying to find an article where at least King Goodwill Zwelithini, King Mabena or even King Pathekile Holomisa have made an appeal to President Jacob Zuma to find a traditional or even political solution to the sad incarceration of Dalindyebo but; DOLOLO!! Instead, I read that he had to be taken to hospital. I suppose the Zulu monarch is more concerned about luxury cars, Foreign nationals and homosexuals. Come on royalty; rally around one of yours – do something, toyi-toyi, twalaza, slaughter a chicken!
Finally, there’s Bavuma – the first Black African to score a maiden test century (did I say that correctly?). Anyway, ALL newspapers carried his story and there was not a single negative article. I have not listened to talk radio lately but I know that there will be nay-sayers who will try to find an angel to take the sting out of his success based on the fact that he is black. We need to rally behind this young man and offer protection and endless encouragement. He also needs to hang out with Trevor Noah to develop a thick skin. The world isn’t kind when one has too much melanin and is a huge success – ask POTUS, he knows this for sure. I hope his name becomes part of the South African lexicon in 2016. Something like; Kuli Roberts looks BAVOOOOOMA today
