Bob’s Weekend News Wrap – 09 January 2017
It was January 08 preparations for all newspapers yesterday and no paper missed the opportunity for analysis. So I thought, perhaps we should focus on other content from print, starting with the Sunday Times. I liked their focus on Trends for the year 2017. Artificial Intelligence was an obvious first and we closed the year 2016 with pride as we read about vehicle advances in the form of a South African, Elon Musk, and what he is up to in Silicon Valley. Dental care also got a mention with a promise of synthetic bio-material replacing drilling and filling. Furthermore, some updates on early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s, and more work on the AIDS vaccine.
The City Press was not to be outdone, with a look at duels for the year 2017. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma versus Cyril Ramaphosa in the fight for President of the ANC at the end of the year seems like one to look forward to. Pravin versus SARS is something out of a 70’s Clint Eastwood Western. How about cop versus cop with Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and Robert McBride? Closer to home in the city of Joburg, Parks Tau is leader of the opposition and he will have to mix it up with mayor Herman Mashaba. We will not be left wanting in the news department for sure.
The parliament channel will also bring us some riveting stuff; look out for the continuation of the SABC parliamentary inquiry as early as this week because former SABC Chairperson Ben Ngubane and Helen Shabalala will appear before one Vincent Smith. Shabalala will be facing her second parliamentary hearing inquiry in just over two years and as for former Chairperson Ben Ngubane – he is the one who reinstated Hlaudi Motsoeneng as COO after he was removed in a board meeting where he was absent. Gear up and brace yourselves then, my friends; its going to be more of the same, if not worse in 2017.
