Achieving a lighter minimalist life through better lifestyle choices

12 February 2018 LIFESTYLE

By Zuko Komisa

In the journey of building careers, raising children and growing, we slowly begin to lose our freedom to have a simpler life. Striving to be minimalistic gives you freedom from worry, guilt and depression. It’s about living a life with no clutter, embracing only that which is important to you, a life with less stuff, debt, drama and financial obligation. It allows you to have more freedom and more time with loved ones.

Stuff

In case you haven’t noticed, most people wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. You need to chuck clothes you don’t need away to have a lighter wardrobe, which will make your mornings less stressful and you’ll have a closet filled with things you love.

Take a look at decorations you have around your home, do they add any value to your life? Or do they just happen to share the same colour as your carpet? To achieve a minimalist life in your home, keep only the things that share your story and highlight your values. Fill your space only with beautiful things that matter, you will see an enourmous difference once you try this. In this material-obsessed world we need to be aware of the meaning we assign to things that don’t make us happy.

Will Smith reiterates this in his signature comical way: “We spend money that we do not have, on things we do not need, to impress people who do not care.”

These decisions often make us forsake our health, our relationships, our passions, our personal growth and our desire to contribute beyond ourselves.

Nutrition and Minimalism

Eating healthy, with so many option at you disposal, can be quite a drag. Even though the knowledge of good food to eat is all around us, from the dangers of processed food, to the odd saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” the information is out there. Being healthy is important in the world of minimalism.

A quick tip for a minimalistic diet is to try eating the same breakfast and lunch all week and have 2 or 3 dinner choices that rotate throughout the week.

Key tips for being minimalistic

Always strive for quality: When making purchases always go for items built to last, this will help you not have to shop as often to replace your worn-down or broken belongings.

– Declutter your space: Get rid of things that don’t bring joy and excitement in your life, stay light and free from clutter.

– Strive For Contentment: having a  gratitude attitude is the secret ingredient of minimalism.

– Let go of guilt: This will help you let go of things in your life that you don’t need, things that are either expensive or sentimental with no real value.

Benefits of Minimalism

Achieving significance: The day you embrace a minimalistic life you begin realising that the pursuit of happiness is not found on the same road as the pursuit of possessions, your values become about what really matters.

Freedom from the Past: Your old ways of thinking keep showing up based on what you continue to keep around you. Clutter keeps you tied to the past; minimalism makes life so much easier.
