Fashion Trends from the Past – Would You Still Wear this?
When it comes to fashion, what comes around goes around, which can make it hard to truly measure the impact of trends. Just as you are trying to process a fashion trend, it comes back up again. Was something that ugly if we’re back to wearing it again?
If you are still unconvinced that fashion being cyclic is a bad thing, take a look at the Fashion Capsule from the 1970s we made to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Youth Day. The fashion looks familiar, doesn’t it? Since it’s only a matter of time before fashion trends from the past come back around, would you wear any of these fashion items again if they came back?
Taking it all the way back to around 1910 to 1935 where women’s underwear options were still limited. During those times, women wore undergarments that were sometimes capri pants length (and fastened around the knee. Sometimes the underpants were short, but not shorter that the middle thigh, and extremely roomy.
This is a recent trend in silhouette and cut where skirts and dresses were indecisive about whether they wanted to be short or long so they did both, with trains to boot.
The period between 2008 and around 2012 was bizarre in men’s formal fashion. The most disturbing (even more than the shiny suits and white shoes) was the button down with stacked collars. The most perplexing thing about this fashion trend was why do you want people to think you are wearing three shirts at once?
The bandage dress was popular around 2010 and was pioneered by reality TV’s Kardashian family. The bandage dress said that the wearer is young, looking for a party and have fun. There was no way to style the bandage dress to make it “formal,” if you tried, you simply looked like you were going to the club at the office.
For about two decades, Christmas (and church) clothes were not Christmas clothes unless they were a three-piece outfit: skirt, vest and shirt or coat.
Sandals and socks
Sandals, like the birkenstock sandal, have been back and on their own for a couple of summers now. There was a time when those sandals were synonymous with socks. How long before you start wearing it with socks all over again?
