Basotho special dispensation deadline looms
With just over three weeks left before the special dispensation for Basotho nationals living in South Africa comes to a close , authorities are doing all they can to register them. Lesotho and South Africa are in talks to ease movement of their citizens between the two countries.
With this special dispensation programme , South Africa hopes to regularise the stay of some 400,000 Basotho in the country. These include students , those with businesses in the country and those who work in South Africa.
Yesterday home Affairs minister Malusi Gigaba and his Lesotho counterpart Lekhetho Rakuone were in Rustenburg, North West to monitor the progress of registering Basotho who live and work in Rustenburg.
South Africa recently received 66 thousand online applications for permits to allow Basotho citizens to stay in the country, 40 thousand applications have already been approved.
Lesotho and South Africa are also in talks about the feasibility of installing an e-border system.
The Basotho have until 30 September to apply for the permit.
